Walla Walla is a small town 5 hours driv east of Seattle. It's name is Indian and means something like the city with many waters, because of all the little springs that used to be there. There are still quite a few, but some has been mowed down by farmers, developers etc. It hosts a liberal arts college, Whitman college, which has something like 1500 students.
On the way to Walla Walla you can
smell animal intestines
smell boiling rotten cabbage (the paper mill)
smell another interesting animal product smell, this time from the packing factory of Tyson Beef.
See lots of small hills that are full of sun-burnt grass, which will start to grow again and turn green soon, when the weather cools down and the rain comes.
visit Tricities - three cities called Pasco, Kennewick and Richland that are very close together, the latter in which you can dance Folk Dance at the local Community Hall and learn Norwegian folk dance, perhaps for the first time in your life.
In Walla Walla you can
work with homeless dogs and cats at the Humane society if you are not scared of 20 big barking dogs in the same room, or pick weed outside of the animal shelter,
volunteer for the Hospice, a charity that works for terminally ill and their families, and get to great people who have paid $20 to see ten different fancy gardens, and tell them where to enter, and perhaps you are lucky and get to drink a little marguerita afterwards,
see car show with lots of veteran cars and see overweight Americans eat hot dogs and polish their veteran car (pet),
dance folk dance in basements,
catch a cold,
see the American institution called Fraternities/Sororities and be amazed by how deep rooted and important it is to some in college life,
eat vegan crispy waffles for breakfast for 6 days in a cantine where students are studying at 8 o'clock in the morning (This does NOT happen in England..)
you can probably do more as well, but the library is closing, so you must go and see for yourself!
