SUPERMAN

"A symbol of American freedom is being able to drive down the open road to any desination of one's choosing or for that matter with no particular place to go."

No wonder 40% of The United States' carbon dioxide emissions come from cars..

it continues:

As this country has grown so to have our roads and the number of vehicles on those roads. Recognising that this tupe of growth may place burdens on the environment [well observed ... ], particularly air quality, the Clean Air Act established a process through which the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Transportation would work together to continue the expansion of the nation's roads while protecting air quality. "

!

This is taken from Hearing 3, Clean Air Act Transportation Conformity Provision contained in Hearing 3, "The Transportation Equity Act" [...]

So much for freedom.
Truth, Justice and the American Way... (quote Superman) (to be continued)

Agreed! American culture seems to be so inextricably caught up in car ownership that other forms of transport (apart from horrendously polluting domestic flights) are practically ignored. I spend so much time on my bike that half of my dreams involve it somehow. Sad eh?
